Australians could be facing serious delivery delays and are being warned to plan ahead if they want to receive their Christmas presents on time.

Australians hoping to receive their Christmas presents on time are being warned to allow extra time, with the 15 suburbs with the worst delays revealing where people need to plan ahead.

According to data from e-commerce delivery platform Shippit, Truganina in Victoria was the suburb with the worst mail delays, with 58.8 per cent reporting parcels were delivered late.

Kwinana Town Centre in Western Australia came in second with 33.9 per cent of the vote, and Broadway in New South Wales came in third with 31 per cent.

Outside of the major metropolitan areas, the three postcodes with the worst delivery delays nationwide were Christmas Island (91.6 per cent), Doomadge in Queensland (79.9 per cent) and Badu Island (71.5).

The data analyses delivery results for more than 4000 retailers, including Kmart, Myer, Big W, Baby Bunting and RMWilliams, over the 12 months to the end of November 2024.

Shippit’s data, based on 50 million orders so far in 2024, reveals the suburbs with the highest and lowest percentage of late deliveries.

Shippit co-chief executive Rob Hango-Zada said suburbs that struggled with delivery were often a direct result of bottlenecks in the delivery supply chain.

“If you look at it from a macro perspective, South Australia and Western Australia tend to be the worst hit because a lot of commercial traffic comes from the east coast,” Mr Hango-Zada told the news agency.

“When you start looking at delays, they start showing up in various bottlenecks, and typically you see the bottleneck is in the sorting process.

“What I mean is that after the goods are collected from the origin, they are concentrated in a central warehouse, then sorted into different lanes, and finally put on the main line transportation.

“So in those consumer-oriented suburbs, which are typically not well served on an average day, when there is very high volume of network traffic due to these bottlenecks, delivery delays in those areas tend to be more pronounced.”

However, Mr Hanger-Zada said densely populated areas such as Sydney’s Alexandra (25.7 per cent) and Rosebery (28.6 per cent) were experiencing delivery delays, likely due to a “high concentration of orders.

“These suburbs have a lot of foot traffic on weekdays, but during peak demand periods, foot traffic can drop significantly,” he said.

“You often find driver shortages are just pure limiting factors, which would explain why we’re seeing this in very popular areas.

“Typically, densely populated areas have fewer geographical locations, so those particular routes will have greater ridership.”

Shippit’s latest data also found that standard shipping averaged 5.6 days and cost $10.26, an increase from the 2-day average shipping time and $9 cost in 2018.

Mr Hango-Zada said peak sales periods throughout the year, such as Cyber Monday, could cause problems for small and medium-sized businesses if they were not prepared to handle the volume of orders.

“While we are looking at delivery delays, what is often not reported is how long it takes retailers to fulfill orders,” he said.

“We’re seeing a big influx of activity from certain retailers.

“When you think about the average customer who’s waiting for a delivery, it’s not clear to them whether the delay is due to the retailer having to pick, pack and label, or even have the inventory to do that, or the carrier who’s actually delivering the goods having to do that.”

Mr Hango-Zada said half of the retailer’s customers would not return because of a bad delivery experience.

“That’s a pretty shocking statistic because when you really consider all the money and effort that goes into getting a customer to buy at a particular retailer, if that particular experience isn’t up to par, you’re going to lose up to half of those customers,” he said.

“The data shows this, and we’ve seen that retailers with poor delivery experiences often suffer in terms of customer lifetime value.

“Often, we blame the courier for delays, but it’s the end-to-end distribution and delivery process that causes long delays.

“We are seeing more significant delays in fulfilling orders from retailers.”

But not all is lost, and it is still possible for consumers to receive their Christmas gifts on time as long as they plan ahead.

Mr Hanger-Zada said: “We tend to think that this industry has a fairly high capacity for recovery, so by all accounts a lot of businesses are relying on this retail trading season to really deliver full-year profitability.

“All of the retailers and carriers I spoke to said their top priority was keeping orders flowing and getting them to customers in a reasonable amount of time.

“We’re seeing a greater focus on on-time delivery, which is great.

“I don’t think consumers need to panic yet.

“Getting orders to customers before the big day is a daunting task in this industry.”
