In short:

There will be a three-month trial of a Declared Public Precinct at Glenelg until April.

Police say their application for a trial was granted after extensive consultation with local traders.

What's next?

There will be a review of the precinct after the trial.

Local traders have shown their support for the introduction of extended police powers in a third location in South Australia.

Acting Assistant Police Commissioner John De Candia announced on Thursday that police would be declaring a trial public precinct at Glenelg from Friday until April 7.

The Declared Public Precinct's boundary will run along Anzac Highway, Brighton Road, High Street and the Holdfast Promenade.

The precinct will be active from 3pm to 3am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays into Monday mornings.

"We've undertaken extensive consultation with local traders, the City of Holdfast Bay and we've undertaken a fair amount of analysis in relation to our police response here in the Glenelg area," Acting Assistant Commissioner John De Candia said.

"We want people to be safe so we made an application to the attorney-general, who approved the application for a trial Declared Public Precinct from the 3rd of January to the 3rd of April.

'We believe that these additional tools will make the area even more safe than it is.

"It's an excellent tool for police to assist in making people safe."

Assistant Commissioner De Candia said the extended "tools" were warranted given their success in other areas.

"It's certainly not police overreach, it's additional tools that we know have been working well at the Adelaide CBD," he said.

There are currently two other Declared Public Precincts, in the Adelaide CBD and Port Augusta.

Business owners in support

Local restaurant owner Brock Meuris said he supported police having extra powers to help people feel safe at night and said Glenelg attracted "a mixed bag of people".

"We see lots of trouble walking past … some people are a little more frightened at night but during the day, it's a beautiful safe place," he said.

Cafe owner Les Aokar said Glenelg was always busy over weekends, but believed the area was safe.

"I have been here 40 years and couldn't say we've had stabbings or anything like that around here … it's not too bad, but any extra surveillance or police is always welcomed," he said.

Another business owner, Jemma Schulze, said she also supported the extra police powers.

"We love when the patrols amp up, we have an elderly demographic so we like to know that they're safe," she said.

"And my staff, too, we only have one person working at a time so we want to know that we're safe."
