Fashion designer Wayne Cooper will contest a domestic violence charge stemming from an allegation that he assaulted his new wife. The 61-year-old was arrested at a hotel in Sydney’s east on Sunday night after police received a report of an alleged domestic violence incident. British-born Cooper is accused of assaulting his wife, Elizabeth Adams, who he had been married to for just over a year, at a property in Campbell Avenue, Bondi Beach.

Wayne Cooper arrives at Waverley Court in Sydney, Friday, August 11, 2023. (AAP) Police prosecutor Robert Breckenridge was in court today to oppose a request to remove Cooper’s bail conditions when the fashion designer failed to attend the first sitting of the case. Existing conditions include that he must not approach or be with Adams for 12 hours after taking drugs or alcohol, or commit further offences against her or anyone with whom she has a relationship. Cooper has pleaded not guilty and will remain on conditional bail for a hearing scheduled for May 19. The alleged victim and the investigator are two of the prosecution’s witnesses, while one witness is expected to be a defence witness. “The hearing is taking place in a room with only the complainant and the accused present,” Constable Breckenridge told the court. Magistrate Miranda Moody was surprised by an estimate provided by Cooper’s lawyer that a common assault hearing would take four hours, and she asked how many witnesses there would be on the charge. Cooper’s lawyers said there was likely to be extensive cross-examination and asked for a hearing to be held later in 2025 because of expected delays in producing case materials. The designer was excused from appearing at Waverley Local Court today after the magistrate was told he had returned to his home in Meokum in the Byron hinterland on the NSW North Coast.

Cooper was found not guilty of assaulting his ex-wife, former model Sarah Marsh, months ago due to inconsistent evidence. In 2008, Cooper pleaded guilty to common assault about two weeks after Marsh underwent cancer surgery and was placed on a two-year good behaviour bond. Cooper rose to fame in the 1990s with his fashion brands BRAVE and WAYNE, which were sold in boutiques and Myer stores across the country.
