Aussie petrol prices to skyrocket across capital cities ahead of Christmas, NRMA warns

Aussie drivers have been warned that fuel prices are expected to rise ahead of the Christmas period. Here’s how much you’re likely to pay in your state.

Fuel prices are set to spike across the country over the festive season, with Aussies urged to check around and secure the best deals to avoid getting slugged at the bowser.

The cost of petrol in Melbourne has climbed to 192.0 centre per litre, with more price hikes expected over the next few weeks according to the NRMA.

Brisbane is also expected to climb, with the current average at 203.8 centres per litre.

Also rising is Adelaide (168.9 cents per litre), Perth (196 cents per litre), Hobart (184.8 cents per litre) and Darwin (175.5 cents per litre).

Canberra has remained stable at 196.4 cents per litre, however Sydney motorists have had the best run after the price dropped from 200.6 cents per litre on December 2 to 189.1 cents per litre.

However the cost has fallen at half the usual rate at just 11 cents over 16 days.

Regular unleaded fuel is sold for just under 183 cents per litre across nearly a third of service stations in Sydney, while 22 per cent have set the price at more than $2 a litre.

NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury issued a plea for oil companies to address the rising cost of fuel across the country.

“It’s pleasing the cycle is falling in Sydney, what’s less pleasing is that those falls are happening at a snail’s pace at two thirds of a cent per day, the oil companies must fix this now,” Mr Khoury said.

“Brisbane and Melbourne have had less luck with the price cycles as their local prices with spike just as families are heading away.”

He added that prices could be cheaper in regional areas, with petrol prices varying by up to 40 cents a litre.

Mr Khoury also said petrol monitoring apps, like the My NRMA rewards app, which provide real time data on petrol prices.

“The wholesale price is around 66 so there’s a lot of fat in these margins right now depending on where you fill up,” he said.

“So if you’re heading out of the capitals, do your research, because there’s every chance … you may well be going somewhere that’s cheaper than where you are.
