In short:

The Prime Minister assured Melbourne’s Adass Israel community that his government would provide “all necessary financial support” to rebuild the burnt-down synagogue.

“Australia is not a country that will tolerate this kind of behaviour,” Mr Albanese said.

He also reiterated that Friday’s arson attack was an “act of terrorism” motivated by anti-Semitism and “hatred”.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged to help rebuild Melbourne’s Adas Israel synagogue as he visited the site of Friday’s arson fire, despite some confusion during his visit.

Visibly shocked, Mr Albanese described the attack on the synagogue as an “act of terrorism” fuelled by anti-Semitism and hatred”.

“We are a nation that needs to come together,” Mr Albanese said after visiting Ripponlea Synagogue in Melbourne’s south-east on Tuesday.

Police are currently focusing on three suspects and announced on Monday that their investigation into the synagogue fire that occurred early Friday morning is now terrorism-related.

“One of the things we discuss with community leaders is that people come to Australia because we are a peaceful country, we respect people of different faiths and our diversity enriches our lives,” Mr Albanese said.

He promised that the government “will do everything possible to restore the synagogue, including providing all necessary financial support”.

The Prime Minister also promised to “ensure that those who committed this evil crime receive no favours and make it clear to them that Australia is not a country where such behaviour will be tolerated”.

As Mr Albanese made his way through the gathered community, he revealed he had attended his first bar mitzvah on Saturday.

He spoke to a person who was at the synagogue at the time of the attack and said what happened was horrific.

A senior Jewish community leader has condemned the “indecisiveness” of the taskforce, which was belatedly established by the Albanese government in the wake of Friday’s arson attack on a Melbourne synagogue”.

He also appeared to joke with the man, saying he was “working so hard considering it’s just the beginning.

Mr Albanese said: “I would like to thank the rabbi and all the community leaders for the warm welcome.

After his speech, Mr Albanese was jostled by the crowd as he walked to his car, as reporters pressed him on whether he was too “pro-Palestinian”.

The visit follows Mr Albanese’s decision on Monday to convene a special operations task force backed by the federal police, the Australian Security Intelligence Agency, the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Justice.
