What’s happened today

We only had 30.2 overs but it was still packed with action.

After a late start due to rain, Australia scored another 40 runs as Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc banged on the boundary to finish the innings at 445.

The break between innings was extended due to rain and then India came out with Mitchell Starc taking the wicket in the second ball of the innings. Shubman Gill was caught by a fierce shot from Mitch Marsh and Virat Kohli fell before the rain started again and we had a sunny lunch break.

We came back and bowled 11 balls, then were forced to rest for about half an hour, then came back and bowled 4 more balls before the rain delayed the game again.

The last batch lasted just seven balls, but there was still enough time for Pat Cummins to get the dangerous Rishabh Pant off before a heavy rain brought us to where we are now.

All in all, today the two teams achieved a record of 7 wins and 88 losses with only 182 goals.

The rain is back, and the players are gone

It’s settling in. This may be a longer break and will take us to tea.

We’ll let you know when we know exactly, but realistically they should take it now.

15th over – Starc to Rahul

Bang! Rahul hits the post for four runs…

Ahhhh, it’s raining.

14th over – Rohit Sharma is out there to face his opposing captain

He was doing a lot of gardening, perhaps to kill some time before the rains came.

Cummings eventually bowled the ball and Rohit blocked the yorker.

Cummins gets Rishabh!

The captain joins the action and Rishabh Pant has to go off – caught for just 9. You can’t stop Pat Cummins from getting in on the action and this time he gets the ball to Rishabh, maybe a little movement in the seam and the keeper/batsman just plays a standard edge ball to Alex Carey.

14th over – Hurry up and wait

Everyone was in place and ready to play, but we had to stand for two minutes and wait for the clock to strike 2:30 p.m.

Got it! The delay did not affect KL Rahul’s concentration as he hit the first ball of Cummins for four.

The next defensive spot is Nathan McSweeney’s in the gully.

Rahul still faces two overs and one short leg.

Beaten. Rahul tries to hit it outside off but Cummins beats him with a ball that goes a mile.

Cummins hits it on the pads and Rahul hits it behind square.

We’re supposed to be back in five minutes

But the rain is set to get heavier after this. If radar data is to be believed, the rainfall could exceed two millimeters.

More rain en route?

There’s an ominous sign of heavy rain coming down Victoria Point, heading your way. Jon

Mike is right. We are going to have bands of rain in the next few minutes and hours. It wouldn’t be surprising if we only see a few rounds before being forced off the course again.

Off come the covers

We can see the wicket again.

The rain came quickly and the ground crew was confident that they could get the covers off. So maybe we’ll be back on the road soon.

The rain has stopped for now

The grounds crew stood on the marquee, having yet to hammer in the tent pegs to secure it. But we were expecting another bout of rain, so I could understand their hesitation to try to restart play.

And the rain is back, but they’re staying on . until they’re not

The rain came and the referee started to usher the players off the field, then said no, then said yes, and we left.

Long story short, we were suspended due to rain again.

Big cover coming soon.

13th over – Mitchell Starc continues from the Vulture Street End

KL Rahul has the ability to bat but against Starc, this was the only time the right-hander did not bowl at short leg.

Rahul hits a hip punch to fine leg and then strikes out left-handed to left-hander, Rishabh Pant.

He got antsy on the outside, but the ball went straight into the ground and went wide of the lane, resulting in another single.

Starc still had two scoring chances as he rushed past Rahul but Starc stood on tiptoes and broke through the scoring line for three more runs.

12th over – Pat Cummins brings himself on

It was time for the captain to come out and then Pant to defend.

Appeal! The pants were hit on the pads, but apparently the height was too high.

Pant got down on one knee and bowled Cummings in the direction he had bowled, but it was off the clock – they would get a run.

Edge! Strike! Cummings hits the outside edge of Rahul’s bat and the ball careens downwards towards the five waiting catchers.

Rahul was hit again, this time with the bat, as Cummins continued to tilt the ball towards him and question it.

Rahul steals the base – well done.

It’s over an hour after lunch so I’ll hand the floor over to Jon Healy to take us through tea time.

11th over – Mitchell Starc continues

Starc was ready at the end of the mark. Rahul made him wait, like a sculptor bending over his latest creation, and made him wait. Again.

Starc goes in full force, three slips, two falls, Rahul clips square leg and takes a single.

Pant, who had three conceded balls and one turnover, was responsible for defending midfielder Travis Head.

Pant defended a delivery that came diagonally towards his wicket from above the wicket and the ball sprayed to mid-wicket.

Open! Pant shoots beautifully, and because of the rain, the field attack will be slow, Head chases closely, and they get three points.

Rahul hits the ball back out again and it bounces off the stumps.

Rahul defended in front of himself and then jumped around to ensure the ball did not bounce and hit his wicket.

10th over – Josh Hazlewood has five to come

We’re back, everyone.

It took KL Rahul a long time to acclimate himself to this pitch. The only person who left more marks on this pitch was the ICC quality assessor.

He slid the first stick along the ground toward the third stick.

He defended the second point.

The third ball was taken to the gully sideline and there was almost a kerfuffle between McSweeney and Lyon between gully and point before McSweeney pounced on the ball. Still no score.

Hazlewood fired the ball beautifully over the top of the goal post.

Rahul falls to mid on and they rush through for a quick single.

Jason Gillespie exclusive: ‘I was completely and utterly blindsided’

While we wait for play to resume – which should be soon – I might direct you to this chat between Darren Lehmann, Quentin Hull and former Pakistan coach Jason Gillespie.

He joined the Lunchtime Stand show to discuss his resignation from the Pakistan squad and his turbulent tenure as coach of the national team.

And still

It seems that the weather is the deciding factor in this game.

Kane Williamson continued to pile the pressure on England in the third Test.

He now has a score of 123 as New Zealand sit at 4-274, 478 ahead of a hapless England at tea on the third day.

Darryl Mitchell currently ranks with him at No. 18.

Ben Stokes was England’s best bowler, scoring two runs yesterday.

But he’s been pushed everywhere since then.

To make matters worse, he limped off after throwing his 13th pitch, clutching his hamstring.

The English Football Association told the BBC in a statement: “England captain Ben Stokes is currently receiving treatment for a left hamstring problem.

“He will not return to bat during this innings and will undergo further assessment to determine if he can bat in England’s second innings.”
